Aula Barat, Institut Teknologi Bandung

Designed by Dutch architect Henry Maclaine Pont in 1918, Aula Barat (West Hall) ITB is a historic icon built as part of Technische Hoogeschool te Bandoeng (TH Bandung)—the first engineering college in the Dutch East Indies, inaugurated in 1920.

The building is renowned for its architectural style, which brilliantly blends modern construction technology with traditional Indonesian design philosophies (often referred to as Tropical Indies Architecture). Its main unique features are the majestic traditional-style roof, which is highly functional for the tropical climate, and the innovative use of laminated wood structures that allow for a wide, expansive space without the need for many supporting pillars.

To this day, Aula Barat, designated as a cultural heritage site, maintains its authenticity and continues to serve as a central hub for academic, ceremonial, and cultural activities at ITB.
